3437 Garden update

Good evening 3437 Gardeners!

This warm sun sure feels great, I hope everyone was able to find a little time to enjoy the vitamin D!  I first would like to say I am working on organizing the plots and soon will post them, thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.

I ordered the compost from the city of Minneapolis! They will get back to me and let me know when they will be delivery it, the days and times are: May 2nd between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, May 4th (same time) and May 5th (same time). I will stay in touch with you when I hear back from the city. I hope to see you all there. They only dump on the street so help is needed to haul it into the garden!  We don't grow the plants. We grow the soil. The soil grows the plants. familyfoodgarden.com

I will be putting in an order for mulch from Bratt Tree Service on  Monday the 18th, stay tuned for the delivery day!

Seeds from Gardening Matters will be coming soon, around when the compost is delivered.  Please, be aware of the seeds you purchase and make sure they are bee friendly, thank you!  Mark on your calendar May 6-8, Mayfest at the Hampden Park Co-op in St.Paul is having it's plant sale! I volunteer at it, hope to see you at 928 Raymond Avenue, St.Paul!

I would like to thank everyone that was able to attend the first two meetings on April 5th and 12th.  We really worked as a team and got the garden cleaned up! We also emptied out the rain  buckets.  Lets work together with keeping the holes covered unless it's raining to help keep mother natures creatures safe.

I am going to be out of town this weekend for my nephews 3rd birthday party! I'd like to share with you what I have been brain storming, if you looking to garden this weekend. I know we are all feeling the itch!
1.) I started to organize to tomato cages 2.) The shed is becoming more organized, Sunday I will be bring back some nails and ribbon to hang up the tools which will give us more space on the ground to store more inside during the winter months. 3.) Trimming of  last years perennial plants near the front, northwest side along the sidewalk of 15th ave.. 4.) Cutting back the volunteer suckers coming of the fruit trees and the tree near the shed. We need to help out one of the fruit trees for it's pulling its self out of the soil 5.) Picking of the unwanted plants we haven't found a purpose for yet (Weed picking)  6.) Gathering trash, I have a large plastic trash bag in the shed we can fill up before we throw it out 7.) Putting up string around the raspberries and blackberries to help keep them contained.  I am thinking of expanding them with putting in a little walk way with stones in-between the new and old plant.  Any thoughts on that? We would loose a little bit of garden space in the two plots near them.

I have placed the shed key in a TopCare Pain Relief bottle underneath the grill.  We are working on a new idea for hiding the key.

Next week Monday April 18 and Thursday April 21st lets meet in the garden at 6 pm or whenever you can make it, i'll be out there till 8 pm.  I am going to have bags we can use for cleaning up the piles near the compost along with cleaning out the 2 compost bins that are filled with sticks and too large of organic matter.

Please, use all the information the blog has to offer, check out the resources for some useful information. Always feel free to email me any question/concerns you may have or anything you would like me to share on the blog :)  Gardening information, recipes or/and information on seeds/plants/insects.

Warmly,
Lynn

2016 Garden Opener Meeting

Hello 3437 Gardeners!

We are excited to announce that our first garden meeting is Tuesday, April 5th at 6 pm and Tuesday, April 12th at 6 pm.  Please be sure to attend one of these two meetings if you are still interested in gardening! The plots are on a first come first serve basis.  We've had a large amount of new gardeners asking for plots so please let us know as soon as possible if you are no longer interested in gardening this year.

We will be cleaning the garden, organizing the shed, and renting out plots so wear your gardening clothes, gloves, and sun hats! Bring cash or check book to rent a plot.

We will be meeting no matter what weather mother nature shares with us unless if its extreme.

Looking forward to meeting everyone on April 5th or 12th!

Warmly,
Lynn

Hello 2016 Gardeners!

Hello 3437 Community Garden Gardeners,

We can smell spring in the air and the Daffodils are peeking out at the U of M Arboretum! Mother Nature may be letting us feel a little of spring next week again with 60 degrees which only makes me want to get my hands in the soil and do a little early gardening!

My name is Lynn Beuning and I will be taking over Adabell’s position of Organizer and Communications Assistant for the 3437 Garden.  I am very excited about having this opportunity to be more involved with the garden. Working with the land was a part of my childhood. I was raised on a beautiful dairy farm, and had a handful of horticulture experiences after moving from the farm. Working at the U of M Landscape Arboretum for two seasons was an incredible experience.  In 2012 I moved to South Minneapolis to further my Early Childhood Montessori Teaching career but gardening never left my heart.  I’ve had a plot with the 3437 Garden for 3 years and I’m excited to be a bigger presence in the garden this season!

I am looking forward to meeting everyone and gardening together soon!  Please get back to me if you are interested in renting a plot to garden this summer of 2016! If you would like a plot again please let me know if you would like the same plot or a different one from last year.

Soiled covered hands,
Lynn

Lynn

Calling all gardeners!!!

Powderhorn Empty Bowls is holding its 9th annual event this Friday, November 5th from 11am-7pm.
