Donate to Powderhorn Empty Bowls TONIGHT!!!

Calling all gardeners!!!

Powderhorn Empty Bowls is holding its 9th annual event this Friday, November 5th from 11am-7pm. They take donations from our garden to cook soup, use bowls made by local potters, and bake bread on-site which are served to the community. Powderhorn Empty Bowls project collects monetary donations on Friday the 5th which go toward feeding the hungry in our neighborhood.

Please donate any extra produce from your garden TONIGHT, Monday Nov. 2nd at the Powderhorn Park Community Center Building located on the east side of Powderhorn Park. Any donation helps!!! Herbs, veggies, even flowers can be donated to help this great local cause.

I will be in the garden around 5:30 collecting salvageable items and bringing them to the park building tonight. Please let us know if you are unable to go to the garden but would like to donate items from your plot.

Garden Day This Thursday, July 23rd @ 5:30PM!!!

Hi everyone!

Hopefully y'all have been functioning in the hot hot heat we've had lately! I think the rain has worked in our favor because the garden is looking full and wonderful!! It's wedding season so I've been out of town a lot so we haven't held a garden meeting in a while, for which I apologize. :(

But not to worry, we'll have a meeting this Thursday, July 23rd at 5:30 pm. Here are a few things that we will tackle at this meeting:

  • Weeding between plots and in the back area
  • Turn compost if needed
  • Clean up debris from the recent storm
It doesn't look like a long list, but the more hands the better! Some of those weeds are well established so we'll have to use our brute strength to get some of those suckers outta there! Please respond to this blog post ASAP to let us know if you will be able to attend.

See you all Thursday!!

We Have Water!!

Hello gardeners!

I just wanted to let everyone know the water has been turned on in the garden! I recently filled the rain barrels. Whenever you go to the garden check the water to see if it needs to be topped off at all. The faucet for the hose in on the south front end of the apartment building on the north side of the garden (just follow the stepping stones). The spigot is kept on a hot pink zip-tie in a shoebox in the shed. Please use the watering cans to water to your plots instead of the hose itself.

If anyone has any problems with the water please let us know!

Eric Larsen with Stone's Throw Urban Farms will guide us as we work together to construct a hoop house season extension system.  Building Day 2 will include a short lecture during our lunch break. In this workshop, we'll look at the importance and functionality of simple structures that are commonly used to extend the growing season, focusing on small 'quick hoop' systems and larger hoop houses. We will learn how these typically unheated structures are implemented by farmers and backyard gardeners on different scales, what types of crops grow well inside of them during various seasons, and look at some of the economic implications they have for small farmers.

Spots are limited for this unique volunteer opportunity and hands-on learning experience.  Sign up today at www.fruitsofthecity.volunteerhub.org!

Spring is coming!

Hello Dear Powderhorners and 3437 gardeners!

Spring is on her way and the garden will be fertile soon! Please be in touch if you are interested in gardening this season at the 3437 garden! You can email 3437garden@gmail.com or just reply to this blog post. If you had a spot last year: you have first dibs on your spot, and also first dibs on changing to open spots. If you are new to the garden: WELCOME! There is a plot just waiting for your loving care!

Also, the garden is in need of a person to organize and communicate with others. (such as sending out emails and posting to the blog) I no longer live in the neighborhood so I am not the best person for the job ;)

Welcome! I can't wait to see what grows this year!
