November Community Newsletter

 Hello 3437 Community Gardeners!

Thank you for joining the community garden this summer! We are thankful for everyone who was part of the gardening community! If the snow melts ;) we ask that everyone cleans out their garden plot before winter is here to stay. If the organic matter from your plot is longer than 6" and has a width greater than1" we ask that you place it on the garden walk way, NOT in the compost bin.  If the organic matter is smaller than the size explained above it can go in the compost bins.  We ask if someone has placed larger mater in the bin please remove it and place it in the garden walk way.

If you are not able to clean out your plot this fall we ask that you return early next spring, before May 1, 2021 and clean it out, honoring a new gardener for summer 2023!    If you plan on returning next year and want the same plot than your garden matter will be excited to see you in summer 2023!

Though it may feel like the growing season is over kale doesn't mind this early cold weather so it should be hardy for a bit longer! Yummy fresh greens after a snow sprinkle!

We are looking for volunteers to help shovel the snow in front of the garden this winter. If you are interested connect with us by email, text or call. Surprises are welcome after a snow fall!  Send us a text msg. we'll come with a shovel and a warm cup of coffee!

Thank you for supporting the 3437 Community Garden!

Next year we will be doing all our our communication on this blog. We hope everyone stays in touch! Keep an eye on your email in March 2021 for a blog about returning and our updated garden plot as we welcome new gardeners! You will have to respond to this blog by text, call or email if you are retuning with a plot request.

If you have any questions feel free to reach to us by text, call or email.

Updated plot map

We sadly said goodbye to some gardeners this year.  We wish them well on their new gardening journey.  We welcome new gardens this year Jenny, Peter and Tifah! We have plots still open! Spread the word that the garden is open this year! If we have plots still open by May 1st a second plot rental will be available!

A big shout out and thank you to Adabell, plot 5! She was part of the 3437 community garden for 6 years! She managed the garden and put in a lot of TLC with us! We will miss you, your blooming zinnias and juicy tomato plants!

COVID-19 AND OUR COMMUNITY GARDEN

The current Minnesota Stay at Home Executive Order allows for community gardening, as long as safety guidelines are followed. We are required to follow these guidelines while leasing City-owned lots for gardening this year.

Things may change as we know more, but for now let’s all plan for...
  • If you’re not feeling well, please stay home.
  • Give each other 6 feet of space.
  • Wear a mask when in the garden if others are present (text Rowen if you need one - I’ll happily make on for you!)
  • We are going to be doing a lot of connecting digitally this year, but for those of you who feel comfortable joining in-person meetings and group workdays we will be keeping them to 10 or less people with social distancing (6 feet of space).
  • If possible, let’s stagger times in which we’re gardening to limit contact. If the garden feels too busy to give 6 feet of space, try stopping by at a different time
  • As we aren’t equipped to disinfect the community shed with bleach or warm soapy water, please bring your own tools, gloves, and watering can and take them back home with you.  The shed will remain locked this year.
    • Those that are financially unable to bring their own tools and gloves connect with us 1:1 and we can arrange for loaner tools for the year.
  • Lynn and Rowen will keep the rain barrels full this year. Please give us a heads up if we miss that they need to be filled.
  • Most importantly, if you’re not feeling safe let us know so we can communicate more to those in the garden community and support everyone.

We’re not going to get wood chips or compost this year because the city isn’t going to be delivering any due to COVID-19. If you’d like you may get it on your own or reach out to us and we can see what we can do to support your need.

And finally, let’s all enjoy mindful gardening and spending time outdoors! I’m thankful we get the chance to stay socially connected with our gardening neighbors even though we are physically apart.

Covid-19

As a community garden group leasing land through the Minneapolis Garden Lease Program, I anticipate you’re looking forward to the start of the growing season. The current Minnesota Stay at Home Executive Order allows for community gardening, as long as safety guidelines are followed. If possible to delay starting seasonal gardening activities, this is preferable. You are required to follow these guidelines while leasing City-owned lots for gardening this year. A Spanish and Hmong version of these guidelines will also be available soon and emailed to you. Please let me know if you need this document translated into another language and allow 1-2 weeks turnaround time.

Please share the guidelines and this physical distancing poster in English or Spanish (soon to be available in Hmong) with your community gardening group. If you don’t have access to a printer or are not able to share these resources electronically, please reach out to me directly.

You can also visit www.minneapolismn.gov/coronavirus for information on a variety of topics. This page is updated regularly as new information comes in.

Stay healthy and grow good food,

2020 Gardening year!

2020 Gardening

Thanks for your interest in the 3437 community garden! Thank you for your patience with our delay of connecting. The city of Minneapolis has set required guidelines for leasing City-owned lots for community gardening this year cause of Covid-19. There will be an upcoming detailed post with this information along with changes happening in the garden to keep everyone safe.

We are looking at creative ways to stay safe but connected this year in our community garden! Coming up next week will be a video tour of the 3437 community garden we have and how we work with in it!

Hello, I am Lynn, Organizer and Communication Garden Manager and gardener for the 3437 Garden.  I am very excited to be going on my fifth year with managing 3437 Community garden. Working with the land was a part of my childhood. I was raised on a beautiful farm in Central Minnesota, and had a handful of horticulture experiences after moving from the farm. Working at the U of M Landscape Arboretum for two seasons was an incredible experience.  In 2012 I moved to South Minneapolis to further my Early Childhood Teaching career but gardening never left my heart.  I’ve had a plot with the 3437 Garden for 6 years and I’m excited to be present in the garden again this coming season!

I am excited to welcome Rowen who will be co-managing the garden with me this year! Rowen has bean looking forward to gardening all winter and thinks it's kind of a big dill that our plans aren't being squashed and instead we get to patch together a creative approach to nourish our inner peas and agra-community connections.

Growing up she was a bit of a country pumpkin and a summer day spent sneaking seeds to start a 'garden' outside the stick fort by the creek just couldn't be beet. Now she sits in front of a computer all day and is finding the idea of some sun pars(ley)icularly appeeling! (That one was maybe a bit much - lettuce all move on). She ap-peach-iates the chance to volunteer and was feeling a little meloncholy, but is now looking forward to some great community garden thymes!

Steps to take to join the 3437 community garden:

Garden meetings are on April 20th at 6 pm and April 25th at 9 am. Located: in the 3437 community garden.

1.) Last year gardeners email us saying you want your plot again this year by, April 20th at 1 pm or show up at our first garden meeting on Monday, April 20th at 6 pm.
If we do not hear from by email or see you at our April 20th meeting your plot will be rented out to another gardener.
2.) New gardeners join us at one of our meetings or email us starting April 25th for a plot.
3.) What plots are available? Plot maps will be posted on this blog and updated daily

At the meeting we will:

*Welcome everyone
*Explain garden rules and history
*Go over and set a basic work plan and schedule for the gardening season
* Look over garden agreements (also posted on the blog)
*Assign plots
*Go over prohibited plants: Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Cucumber THE VINES GET OUT OF CONTROL
*Pay plot fee
*Answer questions spring cleaning if we can depending on mother nature

There are 24 plots that are 12' x 4' and will cost $20. This includes water, compost, access to tools and amazing opportunities to connect with your growing neighbors.

We also have a "communal" gardening area with herbs, perennials and annuals. We also organize donations of our produce abundance to neighborhood organizations.

We would like to reach out to all of our neighbors, so if you are bilingual and would be willing to share your skills to translate materials and be a garden resource. Please, spread the word about the Community garden!

Easy gardening ideas: Spinach, lettuce, chard, kale, peas (need a trellis) beans, radish, beet, broccoli, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, eggplant, parsnip......

Our garden is organic- so no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, etc.

We ask that as a community we work together to keep the garden clean and sustainable with:
* picking up trash
*no illegal plants
*keep plants contained in your plot
*pick from your own plot
*no drinking alcohol in garden
*no planting squash, watermelon, cucumbers or pumpkins THE VINES GET OUT OF CONTROL *water by hand from the rain barrels
*keep lids on barrels to prevent wildlife from entering
*fill barrels when below 1/3 full
*compost nothing larger than 4"
*do not compost weeds that have seeded, diseased plants, no tomatoes

All garden organization is up for discussion! email, call or text  Lynn 612.554.6656 and Rowen 605.490.2273 if you have ideas! 3437garden@gmail.com
