Warm Fall Weekend

Hello 3437 Community Garden gardeners!

Thank you to everyone who joined this year in helping keep the community garden going! The garden was filled with flowers, fruit, veggies and good company, 2 and 4-legged!

This weekend is going to be a great weekend  to get back into the garden one last time before it turns white with  this nice warm fall weather weekend.

Keep an eye on the blog for soon there will be posted a couple community weekday evening cleaning nights.

In the meantime please clean out your plot for the winter.

We ask that if the organic matter is larger than your hand in width, length and thickness to place it on the walkway in the garden instead of the compost bins. There is a lot of foot traffic through the garden which is a way the community helps us out by breaking down our organic matter and putting it back into the earth.  As you can see the large pile back by the compost is from the last 2 years and not breaking down so well on its own so we will see how our new plan works this year.

Also, please help out with moving the mulch pile. We will be placing the mulch in between each garden plot, where needed in the back and on the walkway and around the perennials and herbs upfront along with under the silver maple tree.

We will empty out the rain barrels and turn them upside down for the winter months.

We will tidy up the shed, pick up trash and  place/stake our tomato changes alongside the shed in some organized form.

Hope to see everyone soon in the garden!

Lynn

Mulch

Feel free to use the mulch in your plot, along your plot.  When you pick weeds in the perennial gardens please apply the mulch in that area. Thanks!

Weeds

Hello Gardners,

Let's put the weeds in the walkway! I started doing this today, it will help them break down and keep the walkway covered. So please no more weeds in the garden, Thanks!

Compost

Well this happened: Heart of the Beast Theater is hosting a Plate-to-Garden compost sale in partnership with the MN Composting Council and Specialized Environmental Technologies, Inc. Saturday May 12th 10:00 am-2:00 pm in the Powderhorn Park parking lot!

They had an amazing turn out and sold all their compost. Happy for them but this leaves us with no compost sooo if you are interested in compost this year let me know by email (3437garden@gmail.com) by next Tuesday at 2pm.   I will get a bag for you.

We are going to go in with Heart of the Beast Theater hosting the Plate-to-Garden compost sale in partnership with the MN Composting Council and Specialized Environmental Technologies, Inc.    for next springs compost!  I will see if they are willing to have their sale before MayDay next year so we are able to get it earlier in the spring season.

Sorry it's not much this year but thanks for your understanding with this process!

Another Tiny Diner Class!!!

Hey all,

Tiny Diner co-workers Cody and Koby have a great connection to a bare root aronia grower and will be selling a limited number of plants at the plant sale. I think this is another great way to get people to the sale! Tiny Diner will manage RSVPs and purchases for this class. Description below.

Grow Aronia Berry Plants! Hands-on Workshop
Thursday May 31st
Time 6-7pm
Location: Tiny Diner during Plant Sale
Cost: $5 for plant material
Would you like to grow a unique, cold-hearty, heat-tolerant, edible berry plant in your small (or large) space this year? Come to our short and sweet workshop all about the Aronia berry species. COMPOST

MayDay's Green Team has been making the festival an exceptionally greenevent for 5 years of working towards zero waste! In the last 3 years the Green Team got over 75% of the festival's waste has been diverted. In 2017, they were able to divert 2,600 pounds-81% of the total discard!

The organic waste form the festival will get transported to a commercial composting facility where it goes through a 6-month curing process to become finished compost.

Heart of the Beast Theater is hosting a Plate-to-Garden compost sale in partnership with the MN Composting COuncil and Specialized Environmental Technologies, Inc. Saturday May 12th 10:00 am-2:00 pm in the Powderhorn Park parking lot!

They'll have two hundred 20 lbs. pags of Organic compost at $5.00 a bag. Spread the word!

The process from this compost sale will help cover the cost of the Green Team's Zero Waste initiatives at MayDay. Also to the community garden! In the past we have gotten compost from the city but it is from city yard waste and we are unsure how much of it is organic and what all is in it, it also has a lot of trash in it.
Meeting with Tanya we would like to try to work as a community with the Green Team next year with splitting the cost of the delivery and moving of the compost.

Help volunteer moving the left over compost with the Green Team this Saturday May 12th, 1:30-2:30 pm to our garden! They are asking for our help and contribution to support there event so they can repeat this event next year and we can order/deliver our 2019 compost together with the Green Team!
Who ever can make it and volunteer this Saturday May 12th 1:30-2:30 will get offered a discount on mulch of 40 lbs./2 bags (bags provided on site) for $5.00.

upcoming classes

If you want to go with someone let me know. would be fun to get some of us 3437 gardeners together!

Hello community gardeners of Minneapolis!

I am writing to share two upcoming classes that I think will be especially beneficial to community gardeners in Minneapolis. The first is a class about how to use cover crops in urban gardens. Cover cropping is essential for maintaining and building soil nutrients, soil life, and organic matter. It's a very easy to begin and the benefits are huge! The other class is an introduction to seed saving with Twin Cities-based Seed Sages, a organization that hosts trainings and consultations to reskill our communities to save our food's genetic diversity.

All classes take place at Tiny Diner (1024 E 38th St, Minneapolis) and are sliding scale to make them accessible to all. Space is limited so please send RSVPs to andrea.e@tinydiner.com

Please feel free to share this information with your networks.

Cover Crops for Urban GardenersThursday May 10th from 7-8
Cover crops or green manure is an age old agriculture technique and there is good reason for this. This class will focus on basics of soil heath, case studies of cover crops, sourcing and management. Nick will also talk about cover cropping can work with other backyard carbon and poultry systems. You will leave feeling confident on how to integrate and manage cover crops into your garden for the longterm benefit of soil health. This class is a $10 sliding scale.

Teacher information: Nick Schneider owes and operates Thrive Chef Works LLC, a personal chef and catering company. Next to cooking good food, growing good food is Nick's equally vital passion. His formal experience as a grower includes 3 years as market garden manager for former St. Paul urban Agriculture non-profit, Farm in the City, a summer teaching gardening classes for Gardening Matters, and a summer doing farm work in Italy through WWOOF. He regenerated and expanded a community orchard for Omega One ltd, a Minneapolis intentional community. Nick is a co-founder of Mixed Precipitation Theatre Collaborative and has acted as the lead chef since its inception 10 years ago.
Backyard Seed Saving I: Save Biodiversity in Your BackyardSaturday May 27th from 2-3
Learn how you can save and pass on agricultural biodiversity in your home and community this season. It can be easy with a few tips Koby JH of Seed Sages. This class is a $5-10 sliding scale.
Teacher Information: Koby Jeschkeit-Hagen is the founder of Seed Sages, a local seed saving organization that provides trainings, consultations, and education.  Seed stewardship and biodiversity conservation is a driving force behind her work. She has worked at Emandal Farm, JD Rivers Children’s Garden, Seed Savers Exchange, Seeds of Change, and Ecology Action. She also has a masters in Community and Regional Planning as well as Permaculture training. She draws on many approaches to share diverse seed saving, farming and community-building methods.

Thanks all and happy growing!

Leaves

A handful of you are asking about the leaves in the walkway :)  We placed them there and plan on keeping them there this year in replace of mulch. We'll see how it works with keeping the weeds down and how it holds up with the foot traffic.

Thanks for all the enthusiasm with helping out this year!!!

Water

The water is on! Let's do our best to keep the rain barrels full, thanks!

Composting

You will see we moved the big compost pile to the east of the compost bins. When cleaning out your plot please, put all compost matter that is larger than 1/4" diameter on that pile, anything smaller can go into the compost bins. When the compost bins are healthy (receipt below) we will slowly add this large matter to them for the worms to eat and brake down for us.

Feed the compost bin your house scraps! (NO dairy, meat/bones, pet droppings or animals products for it will attract pest to the pile and can spread disease)  It wants coffee grounds and grass clippings!

Worms will make their way the compost pile to start eating when we create their ideal home.

Ideal home:
*food scraps adds nitrogen (NO dairy,meat/bones, pet droppings or animal products for it will attract pest to the pile and can spread disease)
*coffee grounds for the worms loves their coffee, too
*grass clippings adds Nitrogen
*shredded! paper or biodegradable cups/egg cartons.... adds Carbon
*leaves adds Carbon
And
*stirring the organic matter once a week (a pitch fork from the shed works best) the more it is stirred(adding oxygen) the quicker it will break down for us to add to out plots!

*watering it (worms like dark, cold, moist homes) there will be 2 5 gallons buckets by the raing bins. fill'em up and pour over the compost if it is dry. THe gardens and compost like a good rain now and then.

Maintaining a carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio somewhere around 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen is ideal for a quality composting. We need more nitrogen for you'll see we are good on carbon with maple leaves.

The more we add the more it will heat up and the quicker it will break down!

Please help build us a home!

Love,
the worms

Garden TLC

Today April 29th and Tuesday May 1st  we will work on:

* cleaning up the perennials under the two silver maples. Removing leaves and cutting back last years growth and placing behind the raspberries. We placed a lot of leaves on the walkway so taking the wheel barrow around by the rain bines seem to work best.

*picking weeds/crabgrass! and liter

*cleaning out the remaining beds that have last years growth in them still. Keep your eyes open for small seed signs, sticks that are marking a row...... and baby perennials, some folks have started gardening! If there is fencing up, pols, sticks,rocks.... or tomato cages in a garden plot please leave them in theat plot, garden planning is in motion!

Today I am going to pick up some t-pots, rop and mulch to pretty up the perennial beds for MayDay! We will be putting the t-pots and rop up to keep feet off the gardens. I am thinking of keeping them up this year all and maybe winter for the plants don't enjoy being stepped in general :)

After today's gardening I will post what we are working on and what we are working towards so you all can come and work when it works best for you.

Compost

The May Day Green  Team is donating 1 to 2 yards of compost to the garden the Saturday after MayDay on May 12th!  Stay tuned for time!

I am still waiting to hear back from the city bout their compost delivery date and time. I'll post as soon as possible.

Rule of thumb is to wait till Mothers Day weekend or the weekend after before planting seedlings.  Seed planting well that's up to you :) My spinach was in before the big historical April snowstorm and more seeds are going into today.

MayDay Gardening

Happy Saturday!

I'm heading to the garden now, today and Sunday I'll be there to clean it up for the MayDay event next Sunday!  If you are looking for something to do come and join in the sun today and tomorrow!

2018 Spring Welcome

Thanks for your interest in the 3437 garden!

Hello, I am Lynn Beuning, Organizer and Communication Garden Manager and gardener for the 3437 Garden.  I am very excited to be going on my third year with managing 3437 Community garden. Working with the land was a part of my childhood. I was raised on a beautiful farm in Central Minnesota, and had a handful of horticulture experiences after moving from the farm. Working at the U of M Landscape Arboretum for two seasons was an incredible experience.  In 2012 I moved to South Minneapolis to further my Early Childhood Teaching career but gardening never left my heart.  I’ve had a plot with the 3437 Garden for 6 years and I’m excited to be present in the garden again this coming season!

This year is the 9th Birthday for 3437 Community Garden!

There are 24 plots that are 12' x 4' and will cost $20. This includes water, compost, access to tools and amazing opportunities to connect with your growing neighbors.

We also have a "communal" gardening area with herbs, perennials and annuals. We also organize donations of our produce abundance to neighborhood organizations.

We would like to reach out to all of our neighbors, so if you are bilingual and would be willing to share your skills to translate materials and be a garden resource, please speak up! Please, spread the word about the Community garden!

Easy gardening ideas: Spinach, lettuce, chard, kale, peas (need a trellis) beans, radish, beet, broccoli, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, eggplant, parsnip......

Our garden is organic- so no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, etc.

We ask that as a community we work together to keep the garden clean and sustainable with:
* picking up trash
*no illegal plants
*keep plants contained in your plot
*pick from your own plot
*no drinking alcohol in garden
*no planting squash, watermelon, cucumbers or pumpkins THE VINES GET OUT OF CONTROL *water by hand from the rain barrels
*keep lids on barrels to prevent wildlife from entering
*fill barrels when below 1/3 full
*compost nothing larger than 4"
*do not compost weeds that have seeded, diseased plants, no tomatoes

Our 2 upcoming 2018 spring meetings are: March 25th, Sunday at 2 pm and March 30th, Friday at 6pm. We meet in the garden and will be doing some spring clean-up.
Last years gardeners have first grabs on their plot from last year.  If we don't see you at one of the two meetings or do not hear from you by email your plot will be rented out to a new gardener. Newbies and garden pros are welcome!

At the meeting, we will:
*Welcome everyone
*Explain garden rules and history
*Go over and set a basic work plan and schedule for the gardening season
*Sign garden agreements
*Assign plots
*Go over prohibited plants: Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Cucumber THE VINES GET OUT OF CONTROL
*Pay plot fee
*Answer questions

You will be asked to RSVP by email for one of the meetings so we balance out attendance.  If I don't hear from you before the first meeting, by email (3437garden@gmail.com) and if you have not RSVP for one of the meetings your plot will be open to a new gardener renting it out for 2018 summer.

Plots filled up fast last year so be sure to sign up for a meeting and get your name on a plot!

All garden organization is up for discussion! email Lynn if you have ideas! 3437garden@gmail.com

2018 Gardening Agreement

Please, read over the gardening agreement before you attend a meeting. We will have one agreement for everyone to sign with their plot number at the meeting.
