Compost is here--time to plant! El abono vegetal está en el jardín: es hora de plantar!

The fresh pile of compost was delivered today and garden members helped haul it to the back by the shed. Feel free to use the compost to cover your plot. You do not need to till (mix up the soil) that's already there.

Adding compost will increase the moisture-holding capacity of sandy soils, thereby reducing drought damage to plants. Compost increases the ability of the soil to hold and release essential nutrients and promotes the activity of earthworms and soil microorganisms beneficial to plant growth. Other benefits of adding compost include improved seed emergence and water infiltration due to a reduction in soil crusting.

Now we are ready to plant! You can start plants that tolerate the cold such as: 

• Spinach
• Lettuce
• Peas
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower 
• Broccoli 
• Brussels sprouts
• Onions

If you buy seeds and have some leftover, feel free to leave them in the shed for others to use. 

El abono vegetal está en el jardín: es hora de plantar!

Una cantidad de abono vegetal fresco vino y algunos miembros del jardín ayudaron moverlo al costado del cobertizo. Por favor no dude en usar el abono vegetal. No es necesario mezclar la tierra que ya está en su parcela.

Agregando abono vegetal aumenta la capacidad de sostener la humedad en tierra arenosa, protegiendo las plantas de daño sequía. Abono vegetal aumenta la habilidad de la tierra sostener y segregar nutrientes esencial, y también promoví el actividad de los lombrices de tierra y microorganismos de la tierra que son beneficioso para las plantas. Otros beneficios de agregar abono vegetal son que ayuda crecer las plantas de semilla y minimiza el endurecer de la tierra porque increse el filtración del agua en la tierra.

Ahora estamos listas para plantar! Ya podes plantas las vegetales que pueden tolerar el frio, como:

·         Espinaca

·         Lechuga

·         Vainas de guisantes

·         Repollo

·         Coliflor

·         Brócoli

·         Coles de Bruselas

·         Cebollas

Great things to grow:  Spinach, lettuce, chard, kale, peas, beans, radish, beet, broccoli, cucumbers (trellised!), tomatoes, herbs, ground cherries, peppers, eggplant, parsnip.

Not so great to grow:   Any kind of melon or squash.

Please hand water from the barrels. Water deeply early in the season to reduce the need for watering later in the season.

No pesticide, herbicide, fungicide, or non-organic fertilizers.

Keep lids on the barrels and refill them when below 1/3 full.

Compost:  Nothing larger than 4 inches, no weeds with seeds, no diseased plants, no tomatoes or vine crops.

Give your plants enough room to grow.

Keep plants contained in your plot.

Cosas buenas para crecer: espinaca, lechuga, acelga, col rizada, vainas de guisantes, frijoles, rábano, remolacha, brócoli, pepinos (usando un trelis), tomates, hierba, cereza del suelo, pimientos, berenjena, chirivía.

Garden Work Day: Compost Arrives! Día de Trabajar en el Jardín: ¡Viene el Abono Vegetal!

We had a great turnout to our meeting in the garden this past Saturday! It was wonderful to meet everyone, returning and new garden members.

This Thursday, April 16th, we will be holding a work day in the garden at 6pm. At this time compost will be distributed. If you weren't able to make it to the garden on Saturday, don't have a plot, would like to pay your dues, or want to meet your gardening neighbors, this would be a great opportunity to do so!

¡Había mucha gente en el jardín para el meeting este sábado pasado! Era muy lindo tener todos los jardineros nuevos y los que volvieron este año.

Este Jueves, el 16 de Abril, vamos a tener un “día de trabajar” en el jardín a las 6 de la tarde. En este tiempo vamos a dividir el abono vegetal entre las parcelas. Si no podías venir este sábado pasado, no tienes una parcela, quieres pagar su cuota de socio del jardín, o quieres conocer a sus vecinos jardineros, ¡esto va a ser la oportunidad perfecta!

You're invited: Community Garden Opening! Estás Invitada: El día inicial del jardín!

The snow is steadily melting and the sun is shining brightly! Get ready for a great summer of gardening. The 3437 Garden will hold its 2014 opening day Saturday, April 12 starting at 4:30pm in the garden. Meet your garden neighbors, pick out a plot spot, and pay your member dues. Newbies and garden pros are welcome! 

At the meeting, we will:

• Explain garden rules and history 
• Set a basic workplan and schedule for the gardening season 
• Sign garden agreements 
• Assign plots 
• Pay plot fees 
• Retouch the garden sign with fresh paint

¡La nieve está derritiendo y el sol está brillando! Prepararse para un verano de jardinería. El Jardín de 3437 va a tener su día inicial este Sábado, el 12 de Abril, a las 4:30 en el jardín. Hi All!
If you had a plot last year and did not get a chance to clean away the refuse and debris, please know that this will need to be done before we can add compost to the garden and roll into the new season. If you do not plan on gardening this season, please consider coming back to your spot and cleaning it up for the next gardener. Goodness is always returned. I will be sure there are paper bags available for organic garden waste- these will be in the garden shed.

As the snow melts, there is also quite a bit of trash around the garden, please feel free to bring a plastic bag to the garden and pick up a bit of trash if you are walking by.

I will be assigning plots in the next week or so.
