rain barrels
Our rain barrels and hose location. They must stay here! Also, the cement area needs to stay free of plants and garden supplies.

organic matter and compost
Our goal is to not have a pile in the garden/next to the compost at all. When cleaning your plot, please place your organic matters on the walkway or in the space between the plots. The compost bins can not break down anything larger than a 2" dimension. If it's larger than 2", please place it in the walkway for mother nature will break it down best.
We are not sure if every gardener is reading this blog so if you see a gardener placing matter into the compost that is larger than a 2" dimension, please just remind them. Thank you!

Rules, Terms, and Conditions for Participation
Introduction
Thank you for your commitment to joining the 3437 Garden! We expect a great and exciting season this year! In the interest of making this community gardening experience enjoyable for all who garden with us, please review the following rules, terms, and conditions for participation.
Rules, Terms, and Conditions for Participation
1. Use: I understand that I use this garden at the sole discretion of the 3437 Garden and I agree to abide by the terms and conditions by its policies and practices.
Communication: I know that all 3437 Community Garden communication is done on the 3437 Community Garden blog at: http://thirtyfourthirtysevengarden.blogspot.com/
2. Fees: The fee for an individual plot is $20.00 per season, on a sliding scale as needed. Fees are due as of May 10, 2022. If fees are not received by the listed date, individual plot owners forfeit their plots. Scholarships may be available and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. No one is turned away for inability to pay.
3. Individual Plot Assignment: Once I have been assigned a plot, I will cultivate and plant it within two weeks. I agree that if I do not plant or cultivate my plot within two weeks of May 10th, 2022, I forfeit my plot for the season and my plot will be assigned to another gardener. My fee will not be reimbursed and used as a donation and scholarship to the 3437 Garden.
I will garden all season. My plot cannot be left fallow or unused for any period of two weeks or longer. I understand that if I leave my plot unused for more than two weeks without making prior arrangements, I agree that other garden members may tend to and harvest my plot. My plot can also be rented out to another gardener for the rest of the season. My name will be removed from the plot map on the blog and the new gardeners' names will be placed with the plot. I will lose first dibs on that plot for the following summer.
4. Plot Caretaking: I will not expand my plot beyond its borders or into paths or other plots. I will keep all my plants within the limits of my garden plot and will not allow any plants to grow more than six feet high. I must keep my plot free of weeds, pests, and diseases. If I fail to care for my plot, I agree that other garden members may weed and take measures to treat pests and diseases. Under no circumstances will I use any chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or non-organic fertilizers to treat my garden. I will not plant prohibited plants such as Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Squash, Watermelon, Pumpkin.... if I do I will be asked to remove it or it will be removed. THE VINES GET OUT OF CONTROL
5. Prohibited Activities: I will not plant any illegal plants. I will not smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, use illegal drugs, or gamble in the garden. I will not come to the garden while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. I will not bring weapons to the garden.
6. Guests and Visitors: I understand that guests and visitors are encouraged. If I bring guests or visitors to the garden I understand that they must follow all rules, terms, and conditions stated here and I am solely responsible for the behavior of my guests.
7. Community Gardening: I understand and agree that as part of my participation in the garden I will sign up to receive email notifications from the 3437 blog listed above.
8. Water: I agree to follow all water use rules.
9. Other Gardeners and Plots: I agree to be respectful of other gardeners’ plots and will not take food or plants from another plot unless I first get permission from the plot holder.
10. R-E-S-P-E-C-T: I will respect other gardeners, and I will not use abusive or profane language or discriminate against others. I will work to keep the garden a happy, secure, and enjoyable place where all participants can garden and socialize peacefully in a neighborly manner.

What does the garden do with the money?
The Powderhorn Park Association supports the garden through connections with the city. We pay the city $400.00 annually for the insurance on the land on which the garden is. Other ways the money is spent: tools, plants, seeds, compost, supplies for signs, polls, beds, and mulch.
We also pay an annual fee of $50.00 to be a member of the Minnesota State Horticulture Society. This is our third year. They offer many seeds and plants! MN State Horticulture Society
2022 COMPOST and SPRING CLEAN-UP
COMPOST! Spring-Clean-Up!
We have compost coming on May 10th, Tuesday from 12 noon to 2:00pm. (Our previous email mentioned Jumping Worms that info was from last year, excuse the copy-cut-paste error). Barb is reaching out to the city to double-check for this year as our compost date is coming soon.
Barb will be there for the drop-off and will try to have a space reserved in front of the garden with orange cones. Nate will be there after work and I may be other, too!
All current and previous gardeners we need your help moving the compost from the street/boulevard to the raised beds!
Bring any shovels or wheelbarrows you have access to for we have only one wheelbarrow and a couple shovels.

2022 Garden info- need to know to garden
Hello, 3437 gardeners!
The water key is stored in the shed. It is hanging on the east door. We need everyone to return it thereafter you are done using it. Fill the rain bins if they're running low so we all have water to use. Leave the plastic watering cans in the bins so everyone can use them. Keep the screen covering the top holes in the rain bins with the wire and stone that is there, preventing the drowning of wildlife.

2022 co-management
Hello, 3437 Comunity Gardeners,
We hope everyone is getting ready for spring! It has to come one of these days... We are so thankful for everyone's support through the last couple of years with the 3437 Comunity Garden!
Last year's support with managing the garden has shown us that the garden is a COMMUNITY, and we would like to have up to two/or three people supporting the management of 3437 Community Graden for the 2022 summer again. This brings more of a community feel for us all. Last couple of years we have had a fantastic team! A big thank you to Sam, Janet, Rowen, and Sarah!

Co-managing roles:
(all this is also done as a community during our once week meet-ups, spring and fall clean-ups in the garden)

3.) Keep an eye on the organic matter placed in the compost. Turn as needed. Pick up coffee grounds from MayDay to feed the worms.

7.) between the three of us, we will take turns attending the weekly work evening/mornings. This is flexible and open to change as needed.

We would love to have new ideas for the garden as well! How can we keep it sustainable, community-based, and funded to keep it a beautiful part of our Powderhorn Park neighborhood?

Well, we had a rain-out yesterday. However, being the Minnesota optimists that we are, we knew that the weather would quickly turn in our favor. Today it was a beautiful day to continue the work that Mike, Vienna, and Barb had begun. Barb plucked up many weeds, but most importantly, with her knowledge of the garden, she was able to bring in new gardeners to both individual and community garden plots! Us "newbies" (guided by two young and dutiful neighborhood friends) took full advantage of the sunny noon-time spring sun and we were able to set in all of the existing individual plot frames, rid the plots of rocks, and cover the plots with rich compost. There were many hands today and it truly did make light work and by 2:30 everyone was excitedly exchanging planting ideas and asking if we were going to offer some planting 411. Our garden board will be meeting tomorrow evening and will be assigning the remaining plots-so if you are awaiting a response regarding an individual plot, please look for communication from us in the coming week. Thanks to everyone who came out both yesterday and today; I believe that the camaraderie shared both within the garden and by the smiling passersby, is just a preview of a wonderful growing season to come.
